NYC Police: Car Flips into Queens Creek, Killing 4

Saturday, 05 April 2014 08:43 AM EDT

A car headed down a dead-end street in New York City hit a curb and flipped into a creek, killing four passengers, authorities said Saturday.

The driver apparently escaped serious injury and told responding officers Friday night that the four were trapped in the submerged vehicle, the New York City Police Department said in a statement.

The 2009 Honda Accord tumbled into Steinway Creek, an inlet off the East River in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, around 10:35 p.m. Friday, police said.

Divers from the Fire Department of New York pulled two men and two women from the car, officials said. The women and one of the men were pronounced dead at Elmhurst General Hospital., and the other man was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The 20-year-old driver was taken to Elmhurst, where he was listed in stable condition. Police did not immediately identify him or the four who died.

No other details were immediately available, and police said early Saturday the investigation was continuing.

The area where the crash occurred is a desolate stretch of road near parking lots and industrial buildings, adjacent to a wastewater treatment plant and not far from the Rikers Island jail.
