Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg asked for forgiveness “for those I hurt” in a post at the end of Yom Kippur — a marked turnaround from his 2016 stance that it was “pretty crazy” to think the social media platform had influenced the election.
“For the ways my work was used to divide people rather than bring us together, I ask forgiveness and I will work to do better. May we all be better in the year ahead, and may you all be inscribed in the book of life,” he wrote.
The social media platform last month admitted it sold political ads to Russa-linked sources, and has now shared the information with congressional and federal investigators. Officials are now expected to testify at a hearing on how foreign actors may have used social media to influence the 2016 election.
Executives from Facebook, Google and Twitter have been asked by the Senate Intelligence Committee to appear at a public hearing on Nov. 1 as lawmakers investigate Russia’s meddling in the election. The House Intelligence Committee also is expected to hold an open hearing with tech companies this month.
