Senate Democrats say a Republican policing bill isn’t "salvageable."
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., along with Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Kamala Harris, D-Calif., made their comments in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Tuesday.
Politico noted it is the latest sign Democrats will filibuster the bill on Wednesday
In their letter, the senators maintain there is “overwhelming opposition” to the legislation written by GOP Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. The Democrats maintained even amendments cannot save the proposed legislation.
"We will not meet this moment by holding a floor vote on the Justice Act, nor can we simply amend this bill, which is so threadbare and lacking in substance that it does not even provide a proper baseline for negotiations,” the three senators said in the letter, according to CNN. “This bill is not salvageable and we need bipartisan talks to get to a constructive starting point.”
Scott’s bill would create incentives for local police departments to reform their policies to stop misconduct, according to the news network. Democrats want to establish stronger federal standards against the use of force. They also want to ban chokeholds.
No Democrats are in support of the bill. Sen. John Cornyn R-Texas, called Democrats' posture "pathetic."
CNN noted the bill came after the death of George Floyd while in custody by Minneapolis police and amid protests against police brutality aimed at Black people.
