AUSTIN, Texas — Texas jurors in the money laundering trial of former U.S. House Speaker Tom DeLay appear to be grappling with the definition of the criminal charge.
The six men and six women are expected to return for their first full day of deliberations Tuesday, a day after sending the judge several questions seeking clarification. Senior Judge Pat Priest said he would address their concerns before they resumed their work.
Prosecutors allege that DeLay helped illegally funnel $190,000 in corporate campaign donations to Texas legislative races in 2002 in a move that ultimately helped send more Republicans to Congress. DeLay has long denied any wrongdoing.
The former congressman is charged with money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
Jurors began deliberating Monday.
