Viewers found it odd that Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York was interviewed by his brother Chris Cuomo, when the governor appeared on CNN's "New Day" Monday morning to discuss the commuter train derailment in the Bronx Sunday that killed four and injured dozens.
As the
interview unfolded, CNN reporter and host Chris Cuomo addressed his brother as "Governor" and told viewers, "Obviously to those who don't know we are family, so we've been talking about this a lot."
The Huffington Post noted that typically journalists don't interview their family members, even in the case of breaking news, to maintain impartiality as much as possible and avoid charges of favoritism.
Some who saw the interview expressed their thoughts via Twitter.
"Chris Cuomo, apparently the person at CNN most fit to conduct an unbiased interview with the governor of New York," tweeted Logan Dobson, research analyst at the Republican polling firm The Tarrance Group.
"CNN has Gov. Andrew Cuomo on for update on train derailment, but was it ethical for his brother to do the interview?" asked Jim Lokay, anchor at WCVB in Boston.
Not everyone, though, had a problem with it, especially some of Cuomo's CNN colleagues.
"I don't have a prob w/ CNN's @ChrisCuomo interviewing his brother NY Governor Cuomo about the train crash — some do, but I don't," wrote Fox News host Greta Van Susteren.
"The critics of Cuomo must think the viewers are stupid or something — I don't. I know the viewers are smart and will decide for themselves if they think Chris Cuomo 'pulled his punches' while interviewing his brother," Van Susteren said on her
blog.
