Family members of frontline workers who were killed by coronavirus can receive death benefits from the state of New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday.

"We will continue to show respect to our frontline heroes not just with words, but with action," Cuomo said.

"I want to make sure we repay that debt," Cuomo said. "The least we can do, what we must do for their families, we should make sure their families get death benefits."

The benefits will be funded by local and state pension funds, according to Cuomo.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also recently supported line-of-duty death benefits for survivors of municipal employees.

De Blasio spokesperson Freddi Goldstein tweeting her appreciation to Cuomo for "for  endorsing our plan to provide line of duty benefits to city workers lost to COVID-19."

"Everyday, but particularly on Memorial Day, it's so important to stop and remember those we've lost, and do all we can to support the families they left behind," de Blasio spokeswoman Freddi Goldstein wrote.

Cuomo also asked for the federal government to contribute hazard pay to frontline workers.

"I am calling on the federal government to provide dedicated funding for hazard pay for frontline workers," Cuomo said. "They have earned it by showing up and risking their health and lives for all of us."
