CNN, under fire for questioning the notion a brutal attack in Israel that left four dead was actually carried out by terrorists, apologized Thursday.
Mediaite reported the network had posted on its Twitter account: "'Two terrorists' captured after Tel Aviv attack, Israeli policeman spokesman tweets."
"The use of quotes around the word "terrorists" didn't escape notice, earning CNN mockery and scorn alike," Mediaite said.
The website quotes other Twitter users, who demanded an explanation about the use of the quote marks.
"Actual terrorists. No scare quotes needed," one Twitter user said, according to Mediaite.
The CNN tweet was taken down Thursday morning and the network issued an apology tweet of sorts.
Meanwhile,
Examiner.com also questioned CNN's decision to initially put quote marks around the word terrorism.
"Why is the word terrorists in euphemistic quotes?" the website asked. "The act of deadly aggression certainly had all the earmarks of terrorism. The gunmen were dressed like Hasidic Jews and insinuated themselves among the other diners before rising from their table and opening fire."
