Three Cops Rode With Motorcycle Gang Who Beat NYC Father

By    |   Tuesday, 08 October 2013 04:17 PM EDT

At least three police officers rode along with the motorcycle group that chased an SUV through New York City streets and savagely beat its driver, former NYPD deputy commissioner John Miller has revealed.

One was an undercover officer, trying to infiltrate the gang, Miller, now a CBS correspondent, reported.

Story continues below video.

The officer did not admit he had seen the beating until four days after the attack, and did not try to stop the beating because he didn't want to break his cover, Miller said.

The NYPD is still trying to ascertain what role the other two officers played in the chase, he said.

The long chase along the West Side Highway on Sept. 29 started after SUV driver Alexian Lien clipped one of the bikes and ran over rider Edwin Miese, paralyzing him.

It ended when members of the gang broke his vehicle's window, dragged him out and beat him. Lien's wife Rosalynn and 2-year-old daughter were in the car and witnessed the frightening attack.

The entire chase and beating were captured by the helmet camera of one of the gang's members. He posted it online where it has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Miller said all three officers have turned in their badges and guns and been assigned desk duty while the NYPD investigates their action.

"We know one (officer) who was there at the initial beating, but these other officers, one of the ones that's come forward says after the guy got run over by the SUV, 'I wasn't there for the rest of it," Miller said on "CBS This Morning."

"Here's the problem they're going to face, which is whatever they did or didn't do that day is one issue, but not coming forward right away actually could rise to official misconduct for hindering an investigation once they were aware of it and that's a potential criminal charge."

Miller said the undercover officer is "assigned to the intelligence division and some of the people there are under deep cover and their training is, even under pressure you don't admit who you really are.

"He would be in a lot less trouble if he would have come forward the first day instead of four days later," Miller added.

The two other police officers who were also riding with the group were a sergeant, who is a supervisor, and a detective who works as an undercover officer in internal affairs — the group that enforces police discipline.

Police have charged at least four bikers in the assault.
