Values Group Outraged About Calif. Gay Curriculum

Thursday, 05 January 2012 01:00 PM EST

A California group that promotes traditional values is outraged that public schools there now are required to teach students about the social contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people.

“The only clear solution is to rescue your children from the immoral, imploding, dysfunctional state school establishment,” said Randy Thomasson, president of the nonprofit SaveCalifornia.com, according to CNSNews.com.

Thomasson was voicing alarm about the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful Education Act, which went into effect Jan. 1. The law, which the state Legislature passed last year, amended a mandate to students in first through 12th grades about contributions of people of diverse ethnicities to United States culture and history.

Under the law, public schools must teach students about contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans to the “development of California and the United States of America,” CNSNews reports.

Thomasson, indicating that he views public schools in the Golden State as hopeless, declared: “It’s decision time for California parents. Children will be taught to see homosexuality, bisexuality, cross-dressing, sex-change operations, and homosexual marriages as good and natural, and perhaps even [as a possible lifestyle choice] for them.”

The California Department of Education’s website states that supplemental materials, rather than new textbooks, will be added to curriculums, and that “it falls to the teacher and the local school and district administration to determine how the content is covered and at which grade level(s).”

State Superintendent Tom Torlakson praised Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown for signing the legislation into law. “Our history is more complete when we recognize the contributions of people from all backgrounds and walks of life,” Torlakson said.
