Ann Romney, the wife of 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, is working on a book that will tell the personal story of her struggle with multiple sclerosis, Politico reported.

"With all the blessings I've had, I believe MS has been my greatest teacher: it has taught me about faith, compassion, and serving others. I've met many people along the way who've shared advice and demonstrated enormous resilience in the face of challenges: their stories gave me strength.

"In sharing my story, I want to give others hope, as I've been given hope on this journey," Romney said in statement issued by her publisher, Thomas Dunne Books.

Proceeds from the book will go to the Ann Romney Center for Neurological Diseases at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The center focuses on five neurological diseases: multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, ALS, Parkinson's disease and brain tumors. It was established to explore "links between disparate diseases and seemingly unrelated approaches across research institutions and fields of study," she wrote in a USA Today op-ed last year.

The former first lady of Massachusetts was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease — which affects the brain and spinal cord — in 1998 after experiencing fatigue and numbness.

She suffered a flare-up during the 2012 GOP primaries that gave her a "real scare," she told  NBC News.

"A lot of people talk about a transformation that happens when life throws you a curveball, and the big one in my life was my MS diagnosis," Romney said in her statement.

She is the author of "The Romney Family Table: Sharing Home-Cooked Recipes & Favorite Traditions," which came out in 2013.

The new book is due to be published in the fall of 2015.
