The percentage of Americans who say they personally worry a "great deal" about race relations has more than doubled in the past three years and is now at an all-time high for this century at 42 percent, according to a Gallup poll released on Wednesday.

In 2014, only 17 percent of Americans felt this way, keeping with a trend that had been prevalent for about a decade, with the number even hitting an all-time low this century of 13 percent in 2010.

The pollsters note that the surge in worrying a "great deal" about race relations coincided with the racial tensions in the past few years sparked by high-profile incidents of police shooting unarmed black men, as well as the killing of police officers by black men. Also noted was the political success of President Donald Trump, whose comments on racial matters have sparked outrage among many.

Other details of the survey include:

  • Those worrying a "great deal" about race relations surged from 17 percent in 2014 to 28 percent in 2015 and again to 35 percent in 2016 before jumping again to 42 percent this year.
  • Democrats are much more worried about race relations (59 percent) than either independents (39 percent) or Republicans (29 percent).
  • Since 2015, the increase for those who worry a "great deal" about race relations was 23 percentage points for Democrats, 13 percentage points for independents and only 5 percentage points for GOP supporters.
  • Since July 2016, race relations has been one of the top issues on Gallup's most important problems list with a monthly average of 9 percent after registering only about 2 percent for most of 2014.

Results for this Gallup poll are based on interviews conducted between March 1-5, with a random sample of 1,018 adults. The margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
