The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is using Rep. Todd Akin’s controversial comments about rape and abortion to go after 20 GOP member of Congress including Rep. Paul Ryan. The DCCC plans to make phone calls to voters in congressional districts to highlight Akin’s comments and the GOP’s platform that calls for banning abortion without an exception for rape or incest,
The Washington Post reported.
The Post published a sample script to be used in calls against Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo. It reads:
“Hello. This is Julie calling from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. By now, I’m sure you’ve heard Congressman Todd Akin’s unbelievable comments about rape and his outrageous beliefs about women’s rights.
“You know what’s even more worrisome? He’s not alone.
“Republicans like your Congressman Mike Coffman share some of these radical, right-wing beliefs — that the government should take away a woman’s access to making informed decisions about her own pregnancy.
“It’s outrageous. This week, Congressman Coffman’s Republican Party platform will include a plank that says no to a woman’s right to choose without any exceptions even in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is at risk.
“If you’re tired of this right-wing social agenda from Congressman Todd Akin and Congressman Coffman then call him now.”
In addition to Ryan and Coffman, other GOP members targeted are, according to the Post, Reps. Dan Lungren, R-Calif., Jeff Denham, R-Calif., Bill Young, R-Fla., Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., Robert Dold, R-Ill., Bobby Schilling, R-Ill., Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo., Charlie Bass, R-N.H., Joe Heck, R-Nev., Nan Hayworth, R-N.Y., Chris Gibson, R-N.Y., Ann Marie Buerkle, R-N.Y., Pat Meehan, R-Pa., Mike Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., Pete Sessions, R-Texas, Scott Rigell, R-Va., and Sean Duffy, R-Wis.
