Oliver Stone Slams Obama in New Book

By    |   Monday, 29 October 2012 01:25 PM EDT

Filmmaker Oliver Stone is set to release a new book on Tuesday that will contain some surprisingly harsh criticism of President Barack Obama’s record.

“The Untold History of the United States,” which along with Stone has been co-written with historian and American University professor Peter Kuznick, sets forth the history of America from a liberal perspective.

The book expresses disapproval of numerous policy positions and practices of the Obama administration, covering a wide range of subject matter that includes presidential power, civil liberties, foreign policy, Wall Street dealings, and healthcare.

“The country Obama inherited was indeed in shambles,” the book acknowledges.

However, it also suggests in rather stark terms that “Obama took a bad situation and, in certain ways, made it worse.”

Stone and his co-writer take issue with the president for failing to repudiate the policies of former President George W. Bush and his predecessors, indicating that instead Obama had “perpetrated them.”

“Obama asserted presidential power in ways that must have made Dick Cheney jealous,” the book reads.

Citing an example, Stone and Kuznick write that “in 2011, Obama defied his own top lawyers, insisting that he did not need congressional approval under the War Powers Resolution to continue military activities in Libya.”

The authors also express disillusionment with the president’s approach to civil liberties, writing, “Among the greatest disappointments to his followers was Obama’s refusal to roll back the expanding national security state that so egregiously encroached on American civil liberties.”

Stone and Kuznick criticize the administration’s Afghanistan policy, stating, “When it finally came down to decision time, Obama didn’t have the courage or integrity of a post-Cuban Missile Crisis John F. Kennedy. He settled on a 30,000-troop increase, giving the military leaders almost everything they wanted and more than they expected.”

As to the manner in which the administration has dealt with Wall Street, Stone and Kuznick flatly state, “The biggest winner under Obama was Wall Street.”

The book includes a slam of Obama’s signature program, Obamacare, theorizing that the president’s “healthcare reform effort, marked by the inability to even refute Republican charges of death panels, was so unpopular that it became an albatross around the necks of Democrats in the 2010 election.”

Showtime will air a multi-part documentary series on the same subject matter as the book, which is set to debut on Nov. 12.
