FBI Dealing With Internal 'Sexting' Scandal

By    |   Thursday, 21 February 2013 10:28 PM EST

The FBI is dealing with a “rash of sexting cases” as well as other lurid and, in some cases, illegal behavior by a number of their employees, CNN reports.

Many of the eyebrow-raising details are laid out in confidential internal disciplinary reports obtained by CNN that were issued to FBI employees as a way to deter their misconduct.

The FBI is counting on these reports, which are issued quarterly, to stop workers from sending lurid text messages and even naked photos using their government-issued devices.

“We're hoping (that) getting the message out in the quarterlies is going to teach people, as well as their supervisors ... you can't do this stuff,” FBI assistant director Candice Will said in an interview with CNN.

“When you are given an FBI BlackBerry, it's for official use.

It's not to text the woman in another office who you found attractive or to send a picture of yourself in a state of undress.

That is not why we provide you an FBI BlackBerry."

While the overwhelming majority of the 36,000 men and women working for the FBI's do their jobs in a professional manner, the disciplinary reports issued by the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility show serious misconduct is nothing new.

From 2010 to 2012, the FBI disciplined 1,045 employees for a variety of violations, according to the agency.

Eighty-five were fired. Names, job titles and locations of employees were not revealed in the reports.
