Questions Dr. Fauci Must Answer for Every American

As the coronavirus pandemic spread across the United States, many Americans looked to Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, for predictions and guidelines how to deal with this disease.

On March 31, Dr. Fauci presented a graph based on the Ferguson model, developed at Imperial College London, to show that if we did not adopt "mitigation measures" the number of deaths in the United States would total more than 2 million.

Dr. Fauci coupled that prediction with another graph claiming that if mitigation measures were adopted, the numbers of deaths would likely be in the range of 200,000.

Obviously, presenting such information could — and did — generate serious levels of panic in the nation, pushing decision-makers into extreme lockdown measures irrespective of their consequences.

As a result of Dr. Fauci’s advice, our economy was shutdown, millions became unemployed, huge numbers of patients were denied elective surgeries, many died by suicide secondary to depression, and millions of school children were deprived of their continuing education.

Yet any young researcher at that time with simple clicks on Google would have found that the Ferguson model, predicting more than two million deaths, had generated terrible estimates for mad cow disease as well as the epidemics of swine flu and bird flu.

For example, according to National Review, in 2002 Ferguson predicted that up to 150,000 people could die from exposure to mad cow disease in beef.

In the United Kingdom, however, only 177 deaths occurred from this disease.

Additionally, in 2005, Ferguson predicted up to 150 million people dying from bird flu, whereas only 282 people died globally from the disease between 2003 and 2009.

In 2009, a government estimate, based on Ferguson’s advice, predicted that swine flu might lead to 65,000 British deaths.

In the end, the virus killed only 457 people in the United Kingdom.

To add more salt to the wound, last March, Ferguson admitted that his Imperial College model of COVID-19 was based on an undocumented, 13-year-old computer code intended to be used for a feared influenza pandemic rather than a coronavirus.

Ferguson declined to release his original code so other scientists could check his results.

The list goes on. Ferguson predicted that the number of COVID-19 deaths in Sweden would reach 100,000 by June if the country did not follow strict mitigation measures.

Sweden ignored the faulty model and opened their society. To date, the death toll has been around 5,000. Unlike the United States and other nations that followed extreme mitigation measures, Sweden’s GDP actually grew in the first quarter.

Let me direct some clear and simple questions to Dr. Fauci:

—Why did you insist on using such a faulty model to advise President Trump to direct his policies on the coronavirus pandemic?

—When you chose the Ferguson model, did you inform the President that it had failed badly in predicting the tracks of three previous disease outbreaks, and did you mention that the model was based on undocumented, outdated computer code?

—Did you mention to the president that this model also failed miserably in predicting the death toll in Sweden?

—Have you mentioned to him that the Imperial College recommendations for “most effective mitigation” based on their prediction focused on social distancing for those over 70 and isolation of only those infected and their contacts, rather than banning jobs or closing all restaurants and beaches?

—Dr Fauci, you are now predicting that new COVID-19 cases might reach 100,000 daily. Please tell us why we should trust your word anymore after misleading the whole country with a proven-to-be-faulty model.

Perhaps it can be understood why Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick recently said, "I don’t need his (Dr. Fauci’s) advice anymore."

We can only hope that selectively choosing the faulty Ferguson model was only a simple error, and only that.
