Character Should Be Basis of Immigrant Vetting

Sid Dinerstein By Wednesday, 17 August 2016 10:14 AM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

Great timing! As I sit here composing this essay Donald Trump is trying so very hard to get immigration back on the electoral front burner. And well he should.

Going after Gold Star families simply won’t get the job done. Donald has made it to “extreme vetting” of immigrants from terrorist filled countries, just a short jump away from my proposed retroactive vetting that you read about first in last month’s column.

Let’s review. Last month I called for an assimilation program featuring English, jobs matching, vetting, and retroactive vetting. Now let’s finish the job.

Donald has told us many times, “We will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it.”

People think it’s a laugh line. I know it’s serious. I also know where the money will come from. Carlos Slim is the richest man in the world. He owns Mexico’s telephone and wire transfer monopoly. Every month billions of dollars of illegals’ earnings are wired back to their families in Mexico.

Pay for the wall? Tax the money transfers. It’s that simple. It won’t pay for the whole wall.

But everyone will get the point. The larger point is that following my reforms (Parts I and II) will dramatically reduce the “traffic” flowing North. But I digress.

Technology has caught up with open borders. E-Verify exists, is working and allows us to stop the flow of illegals — if we want to. Apparently we don’t want to.

With E-Verify all hires have their Social Security number checked against an accurate database. Green light, you’re hired. Red light, you’re not. An appeal procedure is already in place. President Trump would enforce our laws, fine the offending employers and make employing illegals too risky to continue. For my farmer friends who say the crops will rot, I say, “Use the H2-A visa program. It’s there for you. And, yes, you will be responsible for their health care and housing. Right now you leave that to us. No other industry does that and it’s time you paid your own way. And, yes, a nickel more on a head of lettuce will work.”

What about the existing Illegals, estimated between 10 and 30 million?

For starters, with E-Verify, no federal benefits and the Carlos Slim tax there will be a significant flow South. The benefits to the U.S. would be extraordinary: reduced crime (the rate of Illegal crime is about five times the general population), higher average wages, lower real unemployment and greater opportunities for younger, lower skilled Americans.

The benefits for the illegals would also be great: family reunification back in their homeland, no more preying on the weak and vulnerable — by those paid to bring illegals in, incentives to improve their birth country, no more living in the shadows and, as a gift to all, no more La Raza, the far left pro-illegal group that enjoys insulting our heritage and our country. It’s a beautiful thing.

So how doable is this program by a President Trump? Let’s check out the elements: Some parts require little more than enforcing existing law; like E-Verify, vetting, retroactive vetting, and the wall. Some parts require congressional help; like eliminating federal benefits for non citizens and job matching immigration criteria.

And one prominent component of comprehensive immigration reform probably requires a constitutional amendment: English as our official language.

Reversing 50 years of failed immigration policies will be neither easy or quick. The smart money is betting on the Democrats completing their program of turning our once great country into a third world, high crime also ran. It will take more than four years of Donald Trump. It will take a generation of committed patriots and the final realization of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream: A nation that issues its rewards not, "by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
