Roe's Overthrow Could Signal Beginning of the End of Left's Twilight Zone

The Supreme Court's repudiation of Roe v. Wade (full disclosure, as a conservative leader I signed a public letter praising Justice Samuel Alito) is a triumph for conservatives. It is also a strategic setback for the left.

It could portend the end of Twilight Zone constitutional law.

Whether you believe that a fetus lacks personhood (making the gravida's "right to choose" sacrosanct) or that an unborn baby is a person (who cannot be deprived of life without due process of law), more than life is at stake. So is the culture.

The mere mortals among my fellow card-carrying members of the Columnist Party call it a "culture war." No. It's bigger: a cultural revolution.

Remember China's Red Guards? "Some 1.5 million people were killed during the Cultural Revolution, and millions of others suffered imprisonment, seizure of property, torture or general humiliation."

America's own "Red Guards" are prosecuting a cultural revolution with American characteristics: "cancel culture." We cultural counterrevolutionaries may be about to regain the initiative.

A long time ago (1929-1935) in a galaxy far, far away (Italy), a true genius, Antonio Gramsci, leader of the Italian Communist Party, wrote the left's playbook. Per Columbia University Press, "Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) is widely celebrated as the most original political thinker in Western Marxism and an all-around outstanding intellectual figure. ... [I]n his prison notebooks, he recorded thousands of brilliant reflections on an extraordinary range of subjects, establishing an enduring intellectual legacy."

The left has been using, and uses, these brilliant reflections to achieve many strange victories over the classical (small l) liberal (small r) republican Judeo-Christian capitalist order that made America the capital of, in Thomas Jefferson's words, an "Empire of liberty." To restore the classical American moral order let's flip the script.

Beginning with the overthrow of Roe.

Gramsci propounded the power of "cultural hegemony." Per Dr. Nicki Lisa Cole, "Cultural hegemony refers to domination or rule maintained through ideological or cultural means. It is usually achieved through social institutions, which allow those in power to strongly influence the values, norms, ideas, expectations, worldview, and behavior of the rest of society."

For example? The left wishes to imbue schoolteachers, who trend progressive, with the hegemonic authority to define, and teach, morality to our impressionable children ... to the exclusion of their parents' conventional values. We counterrevolutionaries have recently begun winning big victories for the right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children.

Gramsci's Communist Party did not have the popular mandate to elect a left-wing government. The left still lacks political dominance, even legitimacy. So?

Per Roger Kiska writing for the Acton Institute, "In Gramsci's own words, he viewed the task thus: 'Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. ... In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches, and the media by transforming the consciousness of society.'"

One of the left's internal contradictions — if cunningly exploited, its Achilles' heel — is that while it loudly pays lip service to democracy it almost exclusively employs elitist strategy and tactics. Thus, 30 statewide referenda defining marriage as exclusively heterosexual (zero to the contrary) were overruled by the opinion of five people (in a 5-4 decision), making gay marriage the supreme law of the land.

A one vote majority overturned the votes of millions. Some "democracy"!

The left, following Gramsci, almost invariably picks its policy battles on the least democratic (more precisely, least republican) institutions of the state: the courts, independent agencies, career civil servants of the executive branch. Also, per Gramsci, "via infiltration of schools, universities, churches, and the media," all elite and typically elitist institutions.

In its 1992 5-4 upholding of Roe v. Wade in Planned Parenthood v. Casey a three-judge plurality held that "At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life. Beliefs about these matters could not define the attributes of personhood were they formed under compulsion of the State."

Whisky Tango Foxtrot? This may be good metaphysics. (Or not.)

It had zero grounding in the U.S. (or any state) constitution. The Supreme Court there indulged in pure Gramscian "transforming the consciousness of society."

Next up? Consider Rod Serling prophesying " ... the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call 'The Twilight Zone.'"

If Roe is overturned, we will witness the beginning of the end of the left's long Twilight Zone cultural hegemony.

The Twilight Zone? Per Merriam-Webster, "an area just beyond ordinary legal and ethical limits."
