Steve Scalise: House 'Weeks Away' From Obamacare Replacement

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives are "more on the side of weeks away" from repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, nicknamed Obamacare, according to Rep. Steve Scalise.

"The good news is you can see these hearings on C-SPAN in public view, where committees are actually having open hearings with votes in the next few weeks on different bills to actually repair the damage that was done by Obamacare and put in place a better system," the House majority whip said Thursday on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"This will be a much better approach where families actually get to decide, with their doctors, how their healthcare should be provided," Scalise said.

The Louisiana Republican said that his party predicted that the act would not be successful. "When the government took over the healthcare system, we knew from the beginning what was going to happen was you would see less care and higher costs. Both have happened, unfortunately to the detriment of millions of families."

The new Health and Human Service Secretary Tom Price is already at work, Scalise said. "He is already doing things to stabilize the marketplace, actually create a real marketplace where companies will come back in and write policies with premiums that families can afford," Scalise said.

House Republican leaders on Thursday presented a packet to congressmen illustrating the plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, according to The Hill. The plan includes tax credits, money for high-risk pools, and a reconfiguring of Medicaid. Some details have not yet been worked out, the report said.
