The New York Times
reported this week that establishment Republicans are in a sense of "panic" over GOP front-runner Donald Trump's steady hold at the top of the polls, but Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday he believes Americans just want someone who will shake up the nation's capital.
"Regardless of whether somebody makes somebody uncomfortable, I think the American people want to see something shake up in Washington," the California Republican told CNN's "New Day" program.
"Whoever is running, that could [also] be Sen. [Marco] Rubio. They can shake things up as well."
Trump this morning topped a new Quinnipiac University poll with 27 percent of the vote, but come January, the polls will likely look much different, he continued. Trump does hold many attributes voters are seeking, and many of his backers will continue to support him "through and through."
"I think you have to look at attributes, what attributes people are looking for," said McCarthy. "He does show strength, he's an entrepreneur and he's willing to change Washington. Also in that poll, what I read a lot into, is the rise of Rubio and Sen. Ted Cruz. I think you're going to see those two continue to rise. They're fresh faces. They also bear a lot of those attributes that Donald has."
Trump has had many controversial statements, including about 9/11 and on immigration, but McCarthy said that each individual has to run his or her own campaign.
The majority leader said he has not endorsed Trump or anybody else, and he believes there are "a lot of people who can be president and be a very good president."
But as a Republican, he said he believes in the late Ronald Reagan's "11th commandment" about not fighting against fellow Republicans.
"I will tell you from all those candidates, I think they would be a better president than what Hillary Clinton would be," said McCarthy.
