Herman Cain’s chief of staff Mark Block is catching heat for the campaign’s poor response to allegations about sexual harassment.
A top Iowa supporter of Cain is placing the blame for the bungled response on Block, who recently gained notoriety for a web ad that ends with him blowing cigarette smoke at the camera. Chairman of Iowa’s Pottawatamie County Republican Party Jeff Jorgenson told T
he Washington Post that Cain’s campaign was caught off-guard by the charges.
“I’m not very happy with the response to these allegations from the campaign itself,” Jorgenson said according to the Post. “I think Herman Cain needs to take maybe another look at his association with his chief of staff.”
When asked if Block was the one responsible for the fumble, Jorgenson said: “I sure do.” However, he stopped short of calling for Cain to fire Block, adding that there are many inexperienced staff members on the Cain campaign.
“I think (Cain) is getting bad advice, probably because they didn’t know what was coming their way,” he told the Post. So they’re behind the eight-ball and maybe not as organized as they should be. It’s time to reevaluate the campaign organization itself and see if they can’t make a better campaign organization out of this event.”
A source close to the campaign said others are also unhappy. “We’ve heard others say I wish this was handled better,” the source told the Post. “We’ve all said that.”
A Cain spokesman said the candidate has “full faith and confidence in Mark Block and the staff,” the Post reported.
