Billionaire businessman and charter school advocate Eli Broad has come out swinging at Betsy DeVos, charging that President Donald Trump's choice for education secretary is "unprepared and unqualified" for the job.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Broad, who built the Fortune 500 companies KB Home and SunAmerica, said DeVos' nomination was "surprising and disappointing."
The note states that with DeVos, a billionaire Republican strategist, "at the helm of the U.S. Department of Education, much of the good work that has been accomplished to improve public education for all of America's children could be undone …
"We must have a Secretary of Education who believes in public education and the need to keep public schools public."
DeVos has been promoting school choice, in the form of both vouchers and charter schools.
