GOP Senate Hopeful Sasse: Neither Party 'Good Enough for America'

By    |   Tuesday, 01 October 2013 05:15 PM EDT

The GOP is too often "the party of no ideas," and needs to make itself more clear to the American public, says Ben Sasse, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska.

"The Democrats are the party of bad ideas, and the Republicans too often are the party of no ideas, and neither is good enough for America," Sasse told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"The Republicans are better than the Democrats, but, in a world where we don't put forward good, conservative, market-oriented principles that affirm freedom ... it looks like elections end up going to the Democrats' bad ideas," he said Tuesday.

Sasse, former U.S. assistant secretary of Health and Human Services under George W. Bush, said there are many smart, hardworking, well-meaning Republicans in both the House and Senate.

"But ... the communication cluster in this party is such that nobody can understand what the Republican alternative is, and this isn't that tough," he said.

Sasse said he supported the efforts of Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas to bolster support for the defunding of Obamacare.

"Sen. Cruz is out there fighting the fight and saying, this isn't going to work and this isn't a time for business as usual," he said. "Washington should slow down and have a big conversation about what this all means."
