House Candidate Zeldin: Time to Restore the American Dream

By    |   Saturday, 18 October 2014 09:36 AM EDT

New York Congressional candidate Lee Zeldin, delivering this week's GOP address, called on the importance of fixing Washington's dysfunction for the next generation.

The nation's capitol is full of "caution and inaction," said Zeldin, a former Army paratrooper and a current major in the Army Reserves, who called his twin daughters, Arianna and Mikayla, the "most important reason I'm running for Congress."

Wanting to improve matters for the next generation is "just the American way," said Zeldin, but "that is not the path we find ourselves on right now."

Story continues below video.

Instead, the nation has a government that "spends more than it takes in, fails to keep basic promises to our veterans, and squanders opportunity after opportunity to create good-paying jobs," said Zeldin. "Instead of courage, we see caution and inaction."

The Nov. 4 election is a way to change all that, he said.

"We can start by focusing on creating good-paying, private sector jobs," said Zeldin. "Too often in today’s economy, people find themselves taking second, third jobs, and that’s still not enough to make ends meet. We can do better, and help families get ahead, not just get by."

Further, he called for the government to fight for the veterans who fought for the United States, saying that the nation "can’t rest until we know the VA will be able to provide the first-rate, 21st-century care our men and women in uniform deserve."

He also called for a repeal of Obamacare, and improvements to the nation's education system, "to put parents in charge of their kids’ education, and give every child an opportunity to succeed."

Together, he said, Americans can "end the dysfunction, and restore the American Dream for our kids and grandkids. They’re what this is all about."
