Winter's grip is expected to continue past the start of spring on Monday and through the rest of the month.

AccuWeather meteorologists reported that enough cold air remains in the upper Midwest and northeastern United States to keep snow coming through the rest of March, keeping snow plows employed for the next two weeks.

Cold air is expected to drip as far down as Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas this weekend, dropping temperatures 5 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of the year, according to AccuWeather.

"This does not appear to be the end of winter for the Great Lakes and Northeast, as there is another chance for some wintry precipitation early next week, and another round of frigid temperatures is expected," wrote Linda Lam, digital meteorologist with The Weather Channel.

"Snow accumulations (Sunday) are expected to be light for most locations. The best chance for more than six inches of snow is currently in northeastern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. However, some higher snow totals are possible in eastern New England if a stronger coastal low does develop, as mentioned above," Lam continued.

AccuWeather said the lingering cold into next week will set up a combination of snow and/or a wintry mix for portions of the country.

"We expect warm air from the Plains to get cut off before reaching the Northeastern states into the fourth week of March," according to AccuWeather lead long-range meteorologist Paul Pastelok.

"The first storm will bring a period of snow, ice and rain to the North Central states from Thursday to Friday then the Northeast Friday night and Saturday," Pastelok added.

Winter Storm Stella this week reminded many that winter still has some life left in it. According to USA Today, the storm dropped 30 inches of snow on Damascus, Pennsylvania, and 20 on Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Binghamton, New York. Four inches of snow fell in New York City's Central Park, per USA Today.

Some 18 million people were under a blizzard warning Tuesday stretching from eastern Pennsylvania to southern Maine and the New England states, reported USA Today.
