It is "terrible" that President Donald Trump called on China to investigate political rival Joe Biden, and for that matter, to have congratulated the United States' "adversary" on its 70th anniversary of communism, Rep. Will Hurd said Friday.

"I think it is something that I wouldn't have done," the Texas Republican told CNN's "New Day." "Wishing China congratulations on 70 years of communism via a tweet is not something I would do either. China is an adversary."

Hurd added that the United States is in complex trade negotiations with China, and Trump is "potentially giving them something to hold over (our) head" by asking for a Biden investigation.

"I would expect to see that prior to our upcoming elections, to see the Chinese do something to manipulate our currency or impact global markets in order to have an impact on the U.S. economy."

Meanwhile, Hurd said he hadn't heard about the newly released text messages indicating the Trump administration pushed for Ukraine to announce an investigation into Biden's business dealings before agreeing to a meeting between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

However, he thinks such messages are why there should be impeachment inquiry hearings in the House Intelligence Committee.

"These are allegations...but these are serious enough that warrant some of the hearings we've been having," said Hurd. "I'm interested in hearing from more of the State Department officials and looking forward to the transcript of (Kurt) Volker that happened yesterday."

Hurd said he knows some of his colleagues want to look at the inquiry to see if the evidence supports impeachment, but he wants to find the truth. He added that he is interested to see how the White House will respond to subpoenas as there are "a lot of people who should be coming in front of our committee."
