The US Secret Service has recovered a "device" from the grounds of the White House, a spokesman said on Monday, adding that it did not appear to pose an "ongoing threat".
"There is a device that has been recovered by the Secret Service at the White House," said Barack Obama's spokesman Josh Earnest during a press conference in New Delhi, where he is travelling with the president and first lady.
"Early indication is that it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat to anybody right now at the White House."
Earnest gave no further details but said the Secret Service would provide more information as soon as it was available.
Asked whether the device was discovered in the White House grounds, he replied: "It's my understanding".
The Obamas are on a three-day visit to India, where security was tight for their attendance at the annual Republic Day parade in New Delhi on Monday.
