Scott Wheeler, the director of the National Republican Trust Political Action Committee, tells Newsmax that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid faces an uphill fight to pass healthcare out of the Senate, especially as he confronts a difficult 2010 re-election battle.
Wheeler, who is also author of the book “Shadow Government: What Obama Doesn’t Want You To Know About His Czars,” says Reid has two options open to him in the face of universal Republican opposition and skepticism from moderate Democrats. The majority leader, he says, can either make necessary compromises to get the 60 votes he needs to avoid a filibuster, or change Senate rules to allow healthcare to pass by a simple majority vote.
Reid’s effort to pass healthcare legislation that includes a high level of taxation and penalties could jeopardize his political future, considering polls in Nevada show he trails his likely Republican rivals for re-election.

The senator, although initially regarded as a moderate when he first ran in 1986, has moved to the left under what Wheeler views as pressure from left-wing groups funded by George Soros that now control the Democratic Party’s political agenda.
“I believe his defeat is imminent; maybe [passing healthcare] is his last act of revenge against the country and the voters who are about to throw him out of office by passing it either by hook or by crook,” Wheeler said. “He has gone too far, and they American people have shown their distaste for what this administration has done, and Reid is likely going to pay the price because he has largely been the face of this very radical, extreme administration.”

He says the 220-215 vote on the House version shows a lot of Democrats could pay for their votes with their seats in the upcoming mid-terms.
“There were a lot of people having to take a bitter pill for Pelosi to get it passed,” Wheeler said. “And we are gonna remind these voters in those districts about that; in fact, we’ve just come up with a Pelosi Index [in which] we’re going to tell the American people how frequently their representative voted with Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, with her radical views.”
Wheeler says this Pelosi Index, located at GOPtrust.com, will allow voters to see how their representative’s constituent rhetoric squares with his or her voting record.
“They talk one way, they talk like Americans in their districts, then they come to Washington and they vote for San Francisco, radical left-wing, anti-American values,” Wheeler said. “We’re gonna let people know. … You will be able to go in and tell the percentage of how they voted how Nancy Pelosi told them to.
“It’s a parliament over there the way they run the Democratic Party; they don’t run things democratically the way their name would suggest.”
He says the Democrats do not tolerate dissent from within their own ranks, which is exemplified by how the Pelosi punishes dissidents within their ranks. Consequently, the Democrats were able to pass highly unpopular healthcare legislation.
“These guys are going to pay the price because they are going to go home and lose elections,” Wheeler said.
Wheeler also raised concerns about what he sees as radicalism in the administration’s appointees and in its policy goals such as cap and trade.
“There is an enormous amount of policy that is done right at the White House level with legislation that’s not even voted on,” he said.
He points to Thomas Perez, President Barack Obama’s newly installed deputy attorney general for civil rights as a prime example due to his unprecedented stated desire to apply civil rights legislation that has traditionally been used to uphold the rights of racial minorities to gays as an example.
“I’ve heard it said [Obama] views himself as the world’s president to America rather than the American president,” Wheeler said. “When he went to Berlin last year and stated, ‘I’m a citizen of the world,’ I think he really meant that.”
Wheeler says Obama’s refusal to attend celebrations commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall shows he is a “sore loser” who instead decided to send a tape that made it all about himself.
“He did not mention Reagan; he didn’t mention [former British Prime Minister Margaret] Thatcher. He mentioned that in the 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall the U.S. has just elected its first African-American president,” he said. “It’s all about himself, so you have this very dangerous ego combined in someone who is … anti-American.”
