Just one day after the Boston Marathon bombings, Sen. Mark Warner said fiscal troubles hamstringing the nation are a greater threat to the well-being of Americans than terrorism.

“In my mind, with the tragedy of yesterday, the issue of this national debt is a greater threat to our nation and our future than any terrorist action,” the Virginia Democrat told an audience at an awards dinner in Washington Tuesday night, Politico reported. “We will not be destroyed from the outside.”

Warner spokesman Kevin Hall told Politico that the “broader point” made by his boss was meant to stress the gravity of debt on the nation's ability to respond to problems and threats.

But he added that Warner “acknowledges the timing of these remarks was tone deaf” to the incident in Boston and other violent tragedies that have rocked the nation in recent months.

Warner's comments, however, did reflect a similar statement by Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in 2010 when he told CNN that “the most significant threat to our national security is our debt.”
