President Barack Obama 'seems to think as if a more timid America would keep us safe," and the debate over whether to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States is a "distraction from the president's failure to defeat ISIS," Rep. Jackie Walorski said in Saturday's GOP address. https://youtu.be/Af6z9zluk20
“There’s a reason these terrorists are in Guantanamo, and we should keep them there,” said the Indiana Republican. "That’s why the people’s representatives have repeatedly voted to forbid the transfer of Guantanamo prisoners to American soil.”
Obama has said that the prison makes the United States less safe, because terrorists are using it as a propaganda tool, said Walorski, but that's no reason to close it, as "when we’re talking about Gitmo, we’re talking about the worst of the worst terrorists in the entire world," including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was the mastermind behind 9/11.
Further, she pointed out that one-third of the prisoners who have been released from the Cuban prison are suspected or confirmed as becoming involved in terrorism once again.
"That’s why the people’s representatives have repeatedly voted to forbid the transfer of Guantanamo prisoners to American soil," she said. "This goes all the way back to when the president’s party controlled Congress. And just last year, we affirmed this decision by a big, bipartisan vote — 370 voted in the House and 91 votes in the Senate."
Also, she complained that Obama's plan lacks crucial details, including how much a new prison would cost taxpayers or where it would be located.
"The president has had seven years to come up with this alternative plan," Walorski said. "The burden is not on the American people to hand him one more legacy trophy. The burden is on him."
