Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling on his country to ramp up funding for artificial intelligence and strive to be a global leader in the technology.
According to TASS, a state-owned news outlet, Putin spoke Thursday about the future of AI in Russia.
Putin said he would like to see the creation of "a completely new fundamental groundwork, mathematical methods, operating principles of AI, including those by analogy with the human brain.
"Russia should become one of the key platforms for solving complex scientific problems with the participation of scientists from around the world, this work can also be carried out within the framework of international mathematical centers."
To reach that point, Putin admitted that more money needs to be thrown into AI research and development efforts.
"It is necessary to multiply funding for AI research, create an incentive for private investment and the development of corporate science, research, and development," he said.
Putin, who previously served as Russian president from 2000-2008 before returning to the Kremlin in 2012, claimed Russia is already off to a strong start in the AI race because of its bright youth.
Several countries, including the United States and China, are working to develop the next generation of AI for both military and commercial use.
