Verizon Wireless led the industry in all performance areas in the last half of 2014 except for text messaging,
according to RootMetrics, which ranks cell phone carriers.
Verizon placed first in reliability, speed, data performance and call performance, RootMetric reported. AT&T placed first for text messaging. Sprint was second in texting with Verizon third.
Smaller carriers Sprint and T-Mobile ranked second and third in most categories. Sprint was third in reliability and call performance. T-Mobile was third in speed and data performance.
Verizon remained first in overall performance, followed by AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Sprint moved up from its previous fourth-place position.
RootMetrics ranks all carriers on a scale of zero to 100.
The biggest surprise in the rankings were the improvement in smaller carriers Sprint and T-Mobile,
the Christian Science Monitor reported. Both are closing the gap on their big rivals Verizon and AT&T, but aren't likely to be a threat anytime soon, the report said.
The report said smaller carriers offer lower rates with alternative products, including Wi-Fi calling. The bigger carriers are focusing on performance and reliability, but that has forced both Verizon and AT&T to take on debt after investing a combined $28.6 billion in the Federal Communication Commission's wireless spectrum auction.
