Twitter users apparently are now able to track the whereabouts of Navy ships via locator beacons activated on the ships in the aftermath of recent fatal collisions, Stars and Stripes reported.
Navy ships were reportedly ordered to activate Automatic Identification System (AIS) locators in the wake of collisions in the Pacific that left a total of 17 sailors dead.
Activating AIS apparently also means the ships can be tracked online, though it's no benefit to other countries who already track U.S. ships via satellites, Stars and Stripes reports.
China "would already have a rather good notion of the locations of U.S. surface ships from a variety of sources, including satellite monitoring," Lyle Goldstein, an associate professor in the China Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, told Stars and Stripes. “No one can imagine that U.S. ships operate off of Hong Kong undetected."
