Trey Gowdy: Perspective of Mueller Probe Changed After Seeing FBI Transcript

Former Congressman Trey Gowdy told Fox News on Sunday that his attitude towards special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe changed after he viewed a transcript of conversations between the FBI and a Trump campaign associate believed to be George Papadopoulos.

Gowdy, the South Carolina Republican who served on the House Intelligence Committee, said that he had backed Mueller and “the idea to initiate, to investigate what Russia did, but when I saw this transcript, it actually changed my perspective.”

Republicans have previously hinted at the existence of a transcript that has exculpatory information for Papadopoulos, who met with several mysterious figures during his time working for Donald Trump’s team while he ran for president and which the FBI says was the spark for its counterintelligence probe of the campaign.

Gowdy said the transcript was not given to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), which approved four FBI surveillance warrants against Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

“When you have exculpatory information and you don’t share it with the court, when you give two different kinds of defensive briefings to the candidates depending on who you like and who you don’t, then your bias begins to impact the investigation,” Gowdy explained. “That’s what I thought when I saw the transcript, but your viewers should be entitled to make up their own minds.”

The transcript, which is classified, has not been made available to the public.
