Republican National Committee co-chair Tommy Hicks told Newsmax TV on Thursday that the organization is still settling on a city to host the GOP convention, where President Donald Trump will receive the party’s formal nomination.
“We’ve had a hard time getting the governor to give us a pathway to be able to actually do our business there,” in North Carolina, where the convention was originally set to take place until the coronavirus pandemic caused the state to forbid large gatherings, Hicks told “The National Report” on Thursday.
He added that the RNC “planned on having it in Charlotte for a long time, we've had people on the ground planning for over a year now, [but] right now we can't have a gathering of over ten people in a room, so that doesn't work for what we need to be doing in our convention.”
Hicks said that the RNC has “seen a lot of different cities” come forward to host the convention, noting that he’s “seen the list” of possible cities that includes Nashville, Dallas, New Orleans, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and Orlando.
“What we think about is how do we logistically get thousands and thousands of people who want to go celebrate a nomination for president, and I think there are some great cities on there, cities with mayors who are pro-business and states that have governors who are pro-business, and we're the pro-business party. So, I think that's what we focus on, and it will be something that we're really excited about, and we're on the phone constantly with our members and our delegates and people who supported the president, and they're all excited about the celebration.”
