Rep. Tim Ryan, said Wednesday he's "strongly considering" a run for the White House, and argued in favor of using more technology to protect the nation's border.
"I'm for border security big time," the Ohio Democrat told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "We need to use technology and barriers where they can be helpful...you can't put the wall in the middle of the Rio Grande River. You are not going to go down and seize property from farmers and ranchers in South Texas. Even Republicans down there don't want that to happen."
Members of the House voted to block Trump's emergency declaration, and Ryan said his state's businesses stand to lose millions if money is reappropriated to wall construction.
"Congress appropriated money to go to projects like in northeast Ohio, and in Ohio, we are going to potentially lose about $80 million of military construction projects," said Ryan.
Ryan said he wants to see the money spent where the problems are, particularly at the nation's ports of entry, where 90 percent of the drugs entering the country come through.
President Donald Trump has to compromise, and everyone has to compromise to come to a resolution on the border, he added.
"I hope we can get this issue off the table and start talking about jobs, the economy, and the future of work," said Ryan. "Our competition with China, we have got to solve this problem because China is coming at us and we are not prepared right now."
Ryan said he will make his decision on a 2020 campaign within the next few weeks.
