Apple CEO Tim Cook on Monday told Donald Trump the tech sector is "nervous" about his administration's tough stance on immigration and also asked the president to show more "heart" in his approach, a source told CNBC.

Cook, who was at the White House attending the tech CEO meeting, also mentioned the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy (DACA), a program which aims to protect eligible immigrant youth who came to the U.S. when they were children from deportation and is currently under review by the Trump administration.

The tech sector has in recent years been one of the biggest boosters of immigration reform since changes are needed to bring more foreign engineers and programmers into the U.S. Many tech CEOs fought Trump on his immigration ban when he first unveiled it because it inflicted "substantial harm on U.S. companies."

Trump, according to the source, told the CEOs of the new healthcare bill it needed "more heart," to which Cook replied the administration's immigration approach also "needs more heart."

Cook also said it "would be great" if tech employees got a clear signal from the president on reform. Trump told the CEOs he wanted comprehensive immigration reform and urged them to call their lawmakers to push for it.
