The president of Ukraine said Russia is mobilizing tanks near his country's border and he fears an invasion could take place soon.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko showed Sky News satellite photos that he said showed tanks amassing 18 kilometers, or about 11 miles, from the Russia-Ukraine border. He said the tanks are near where Russian military ammunition is stored.
"This is the tank base just 18km from our border, this was happening in September, October, and now," Poroshenko said. "This is 18km from my border, this is the same warehouse where they have their ammunition, the same where they have multi-rocket launch systems, we should be prepared to protect my country.
"If the whole world has no reason to trust [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, Ukraine definitely doesn't have a reason to go with him."
Russian military ships fired upon Ukrainian ships on Sunday in the Black Sea near the Kerch Strait, rammed a government tug boat, took possession of three vessels, and captured two dozen sailors who are still being held.
The Guardian reported this week that Russia is still blocking access to several Ukrainian ports on the Sea of Azov, a body of water that features Russia on the eastern side and Ukraine on the opposite shore. Several dozen Ukrainian ships have been blocked from either entering or leaving the sea.
Russia took control of Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula that juts into the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, in 2014.
President Donald Trump canceled a planned meeting with Putin at the G-20 Summit, which begins Friday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, because Russia has not released the captured Ukrainian ships and sailors.
