Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., typically one of President Donald Trump’s top allies in the Senate, said Tuesday that Stephen Moore would be a “very problematic nomination” to the Federal Reserve Board, The Hill reports.
Moore, who advised Trump’s 2016 campaign, has recently come under fire for articles he wrote for the National Review that warned against “the feminization of basketball." Moore also complained about female athletes seeking equal pay to male athletes, and proposed that women only participate in sports “if and only if, they look like Bonnie Bernstein.”
A more recent article has him warning against a society in which women earn more than men. Moore defended his writings, saying, “This was a spoof. I have a sense of humor.”
In an interview on Tuesday, Moore told CNBC that the biggest problem in the U.S. economy is declining “male earnings.”
Several Republican senators have expressed reservations about, or outright dismissed, Moore’s nomination, according to CNN. Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa also cast doubt on Moore’s nomination, saying that her support is “very unlikely.” Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said she had “reservations,” and West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said of Moore, “it’s hard to look past some of those.”
