Telecommunications giant AT&T has for decades partnered with the National Security Agency to make it possible for the government to spy on Internet traffic in the U.S, The New York Times reports.

Newly disclosed NSA documents reveal that the AT&T relationship to be "highly collaborative" and the company has exhibited an "extreme willingness to help."

The documents, shared with the Times by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, covered activities from 2003 to 2013, and gave the agency access to billions of emails, the newspaper reports.

Verizon was also cited in the documents.

AT&T and Verizon declined to discuss the findings with the Times. "We don’t comment on matters of national security," an AT&T spokesman said.
