Rogers: Snowden May Have Had Help

By    |   Tuesday, 03 December 2013 02:05 PM EST

National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden may have had help in downloading classified government documents, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee told Fox News.

Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers said Monday there is mounting evidence to suggest that Snowden had an accomplice when he downloaded around 20,000 documents, although Snowden reportedly was quick to deny he had assistance.

"We know he did some things capability-wise that was beyond his capabilities," Rogers told Fox. "Which means he used someone else's help to try and steal things from the United States, the people of the United States -- classified information, information we use to keep America safe."

Rogers, who is privy to classified information surrounding the Snowden leaks, revealed that Snowden may have been in contact with a third person while he was working as a contractor in Hong Kong.

"There was some activity there in China about who he talked to and what was the purpose of his visit there, how was it arranged, how did he arrange a visa so quickly to Russia? Those kinds of questions have not been answered in a satisfactory way," the congressman said.

But journalist Glenn Greenwald, who published Snowden's leaks, slammed Rogers' claim as unfounded.

"Until he (Rogers) offers actual evidence rather than his empty assertions, everyone should treat this claim as the unreliable and unconfirmed propaganda that it is," Greenwald said in an email to Fox News.

"Defenders of domestic surveillance can't keep their story straight. One minute they say Snowden is a brilliant mastermind, and the next minute they say he is a dunce who must have had help."

Greenwald later contacted Fox News again to say, "I contacted Snowden, who confirms that he 'acted alone and without outside assistance of any kind.'"

Snowden was also attacked on "Fox News Sunday" by former NSA and CIA Director Michael Hayden, who called him a "narcissistic young man" who has created a "catastrophic" situation for the safety of America.
