Pop star Justin Timberlake is in the clear with authorities after being investigated for allegedly violating election laws when he posted a selfie at a voting booth in Shelby County, TN. on Monday.
Shelby County District Attorney's Office communications director Vince Higgins told Us Weekly Tuesday that his department "was made aware of a possible violation of election law” and that the “matter is under review by the D.A.'s office."
But US Weekly updated its story late Tuesday evening with news that no formal complaint had been filed and that Timberlake was in the clear.
Violators can face 30 days in jail and a maximum $50 fine for taking photos at polling.
Timberlake shared a picture of himself on Instagram with the words, “Hey! You! Yeah, YOU! I just flew from LA to Memphis to #rockthevote. There could be early voting in your town too. If not, November 8th! Choose to have a voice! If you don't, then we can't HEAR YOU! Get out and VOTE! #exerciseyourrighttovote."
His intent was to get voters out to sites early.
But Tennessee laws prohibit using cell phones at polling sites unless it’s for informational purposes to assist the voter in making election decisions. Taking photos or videos is not allowed and neither is making a phone call inside the poll site.
The laws are different in every state. Ballot selfies are allowed in Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington State and Wyoming.
