Secret Service Takes to Twitter to Solicit Leads

By    |   Tuesday, 06 August 2013 03:16 PM EDT

Secret Service agents are taking to the social media site Twitter to solicit leads amid increased terror threats.

"Contact your nearest field office with time-sensitive or critical info or to report a tweet," the Secret Service said in the latest tweet sent out to its 67,000 followers Tuesday morning.

The link in that tweet takes its followers to a list of Secret Service Field Offices and their phone numbers across the country and overseas.

Another Secret Service tweet sent out Tuesday morning asked followers: "Have you seen any of our Most Wanted?"

The tweet linked to a list of the Most Wanted Fugitives, mostly suspected of bank fraud and identity theft.

The Secret Service asked its followers in October 2012 to report any tweets that "concern you," according to CNSNews.

While the agency is using its Twitter account to solicit information on potential threats and track down suspects, the tweets are mostly informational, also providing news on relevant court decisions.

The Secret Service launched its first Twitter account in May 2011, mainly as a recruiting tool.

"By using social media sites, we hope to supplement our recruitment efforts, while providing an informative, helpful tool to businesses and individuals who are interested in information from our agency," said Secret Service Assistant Director Mickey Nelson at the time.
