A Rhode Island town took the unusual step this week of declaring itself a sanctuary city for gun owners.
The Providence Journal reported that Burrillville, a town of around 15,000 people situated in Rhode Island's northwest corner, unanimously passed a resolution this week that protects its citizens' Second Amendment right to bear arms.
Donald A. Fox sponsored the resolution and told the Journal he grew tired of the anti-gun movement on the left.
"I'm taking the sanctuary city status that's been used by progressives and liberals around this country" and turning it on its head, Fox said. "We're thumbing our nose at the federal government. We're no longer going to be used as a punching bag for the left, for the anti-gun movement.
"Every spring, I have to put on my yellow vest and defend the rights that are afforded to me under the Constitution. I finally got tired of it. Maybe it's time for the town to take a stand."
As part of the resolution, the town will not be responsible for shelling out money for additional storage space if various firearms are deemed illegal by either the state or federal government.
Councilman Dennis Anderson told the Journal, "We don't think people with a different view should be eroding [our] rights. Let's say we are happy with our rights just the way they are."
President Donald Trump traveled to Indianapolis Friday morning and gave a speech at the National Rifle Association's annual Leadership Forum. He called himself a "champion for the Second Amendment" and announced he withdrew the U.S. from a 2013 United Nations arms treaty.
