Fla. Gov. Scott to Newsmax: Trayvon Case ‘Headed In the Right Direction’

Florida Gov. Rick Scott says he remains focused on “justice for the Trayvon Martin family” and “due process for George Zimmerman.” Scott spoke with reporters about the slaying case following an appearance at the Palm Beach Strategic Forum, an event that examines economic and governance challenges facing the Americas in the global economy.

Scott also briefly addressed GOP front-runner Mitt Romney’s chances to take Florida in the general election.

“I think everyone is comfortable that Angela Corey [the special prosecutor appointed by Scott] is doing a good job. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has a great reputation. So I think we are headed in the right direction,” Scott said.

Corey’s critics have alleged the media and public opinion influenced the filing of second-degree murder charges against Zimmerman. But Scott defended Corey when asked by Newsmax about those claims.

“I don’t think Angela gets influenced by things other than what the facts are. You saw her press conference. She’s somebody who cares about victims. She wants due process for everybody involved. She wants to get the facts out. So, she makes her decision based on the facts and what’s right,” Scott said.

During the question-and-answer session with reporters, Scott a first-term Republican governor, also offered guarded support for Mitt Romney who is now the presumed GOP nominee.

“What I’ve said is the same as an endorsement. I think Governor Romney is going to do … he’ll do a great job. I think the race is going to come down to – who does the public believe is going to get jobs going.”

Scott said Romney’s success in the general election — and in Florida — hinges on his ability to sell his economic and jobs plan to voters like he  did in 2010.

“If you travel our state, and I assume it’s the same thing in other states, it’s about jobs. In our state, everyone wants to make sure their child can get an education, but they are really worried about their jobs.

“It’s the same as my race, what, a year and a half ago. It’s going to be about who’s got the right plan for job creation. So if Gov. Romney can explain that well, he’s going to win,” Scott said.
