President Donald Trump on Tuesday boldly claimed he would not "need an exit strategy" if war were to break out between the United States and Iran.
Answering questions from reporters in the Oval Office, Trump was asked about an outcome if there was war between the countries. The remark comes at the 19:54-minute mark.
"You're not going to need an exit strategy," Trump snapped. "I don't need exit strategies."
"We would love to be able to negotiate a deal if they want to. If they don't want to, that's fine, too," the president added. "But we would love to be able to, and frankly, they might as well do it soon."
The comments come as tensions are high between Washington and Tehran in the wake of the downing of a U.S. drone by Iran. Trump announced additional sanctions Monday against Iran's leader and top officials.
"Obviously, the people of Iran are great people," Trump said Tuesday. "I know many of them. I lived in New York — I haven't been there very much in the last two and a half years — but I know many Iranians living in New York, and they're fantastic people."
"I have many friends that are Iranian, and it's very sad what's happening to that country," he said.
