Despite the closing of workout facilities across the country, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is continuing her regular sessions twice a week at the private Supreme Court gym, her personal trainer told Law360.
"Everybody's been shut down,” said her trainer, Bryant Johnson. “The only reason why I didn't shut the justice down is because, hey, she ain't having it. Her choice is, she doesn't make excuses not to do it. So we find ways to do it."
Due to the pandemic, Washington, D.C. issued a stay-at-home order and closed all public gyms, according to CNN.
Asked if it is wise under these conditions to continue training with the 87-year-old Ginsburg, a four-time cancer survivor who is at higher risk of getting sick, Johnson told Law360 that he is taking extra precautions to keep her safe.
"Before I go in, I wipe down every piece of equipment that I think she is going to touch and come in contact with," Johnson said. "Then I go back in and wash my hands."
He also explained that since he has trained with her for so many years, "All I have to do is set it up and she just automatically knows exactly what I want to do. It doesn't require me to grab her, hold her, get up close and personal."
The Supreme Court itself postponed 11 cases that were to have been heard in March and has not yet announced when regular oral arguments scheduled for April will occur, according to CNN.
During the pandemic, justices have been working from home and decisions are being issued online, rather than in the courtroom.
