Sen. Rubio: I Was Targeted by Russian Hackers

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday he was targeted last year during his Senate re-election bid — and just in the past day — by Russian hackers.

"In the first panel, one of the individuals who appeared before us mentioned me in connection with efforts in the 2016 presidential primary," the Florida Republican said during the Senate Intelligence Committee's hearing on Moscow's involvement in last year's election.

"In July of 2016, shortly after I announced that I would seek re-election to the United States Senate, former members of my presidential campaign team, who had access to the internal information of my presidential campaign, were targeted by IP addresses with an unknown location within Russia.

"That effort was unsuccessful," Rubio.

However, "I'd also inform the committee," he continued, "that within the last 24 hours, at 10:45 a.m. [Wednesday], a second attempt was made, again against former members of my presidential campaign team, who had access to our internal information, again targeted from an IP address from an unknown location in Russia — and that effort was also unsuccessful."

Rubio's disclosure was the first by a political candidate other than President Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton regarding Russian involvement in the election.

The revelation also comes amid inquiries by the Senate panel Rubio sits on, as well as by the House Intelligence Committee.

The FBI also is conducting its own investigation.

Rubio, who is in his second term, declined to provide specifics, saying only that more information would be made available if and when his committee releases a report.
