Rubio Security Upped After ‘Credible Threat’

By    |   Wednesday, 25 April 2012 07:49 AM EDT

Police have increased protection for rising GOP star Sen. Marco Rubio after he received an unspecified threat, the Republican’s office has confirmed.

The threat was deemed “credible enough to merit police protection in Washington, D.C., and at his home in West Miami,” the Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

The Herald said a police cruiser was parked outside the Florida senator’s in-state home on Tuesday night, even though he was not home. He is due to give what has been termed a “major” foreign policy speech at the Brookings Institute in Washington on Wednesday.

Rubio’s office would not reveal details of the threat and the Herald said neither the D.C. Capitol Police nor West Miami Police Department could be contacted.

Rubio, 40, is married with four children. He is widely considered one of the favorites as Mitt Romney’s running mate in the November election. On Monday the two men toured Pennsylvania together.

If Romney picks him, Rubio would receive round-the-clock Secret Service protection.
