Best-selling author and entrepreneur Wayne Allyn Root, who ran as the vice presidential nominee of the Libertarian Party in 2008, has a new book and an enthusiastic new outlook on why he should be running the country.
Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella chatted with the author of "The Conscience of a Libertarian: Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gambling and Tax Cuts," and asked a simple leading question about what Root hoped readers would learn from the book.

“Well, what inspired me to write the book is my unique background you know. I'm not your typical politician,” said Root. “I'm an SOB — a son of a butcher. I'm a small businessman. I'm a home school father of four young children. I'm a citizen statesman just as the Founding Fathers intended and I like to call myself a capitalist evangelist you know.
“I have never worked for a government in my life,” Root added. “I have never owned a business that does business with government. I have never collected a government check in my life — other than an IRS refund of my own money. And I'm from the state of Nevada, and I think that that is different and refreshing as well.”
Martella asked Root about Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is behind in polls against his GOP challenger, Danny Tarkanian, a real estate professional and former basketball player at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
“Harry Reid is an aberration, you know,” Root said. “He started out as a pretty common-sense, blue-collar, conservative kind of guy, and he won people over as a man of the people. I don't know where he went wrong, but I would call him part of the most severe problem with our country today — Reid, Pelosi, Dodd, Frank and, of course, the socialist-in-chief Barack Obama. Harry is the enabler of Barack Obama.
“So I think that it is time to send Harry packing back to Nevada, and he can retire into private law practice. Maybe that is the problem. I'm not a big fan of lawyers. Harry is a lawyer. So if we get rid of the lawyers, we solve the whole healthcare problem along the way.”
Reid is extremely “beatable” in any matchup with the GOP in Nevada, Root said.
“People all over the country have been e-mailing me and asking me to run against him, and I'm giving it some thought, but the truth is my mind and my eyes are focused like a laser on one thing and that is my college classmate, Barack Obama.
“We both graduated Columbia University, believe it or not, Class of '83, and in 2012, if I run, it would be the first time in the history of America that two college classmates run against each other for president.”
Martella pointed out that Root had called Obama a communist during the election campaign last year.
“Well, obviously I look pretty smart now. I was criticized a little bit then. I certainly could have said those words a little bit more subtly,” Root said. “I would have rather have said that he is a socialist. They quoted me saying communist to be honest with you. I believe I said socialist and Marxist.
“There's not that much difference, but I'm not really a subtle guy anyways, so you might as well go for it. Listen, when I went to Columbia University in Obama's Class of '83, everybody I met, literally everybody, was a socialist or a Marxist,” Root said. “There was no other way to describe them. They hated America. They hated capitalists. They hated businesses. Anyone that made money they were against them, and they all went on to become lawyers.”
Martella asked Root whether he was trying to make an argument to persuade conservatives to become Libertarians.
“Absolutely, no question about it,” Root said. “Although I will tell you right off the bat I think that conservatives are the group that should be in the coalition with Libertarians, and we can elect a presidential candidate that is certainly an economic conservative and that wants government out of our lives — because if you think that Republicans are going to get the job done, you are kidding yourself.
“I really believe actually in 2010 that Republicans are going to sweep Congress and take control again,” Root said. “But it's not because they did anything right. It's not because they are so wonderful as politicians. It's just because they are not Obama. It's the same reason when people ask me why did Obama win the election. It's because he wasn't Bush. That's the only reason that he was voted for. They were pulling the lever for ABB (anyone but Bush), and so in 2010 I think that they will vote Republicans in because they are so scared of what Democrats and Obama are doing to our country.”
