President Donald Trump told his former political adviser, who is facing possible prison time, that he “can sleep well at night” in a Thursday morning tweet.

Trump hinted at a possible pardon for Stone, calling him a “victim of a corrupt and illegal Witch Hunt.”

Stone was convicted for lying to investigators and witness tampering during a special investigation into Russia interference in the 2016 presidential election. He was sentenced to serve 40 months behind bars. Stone has filed for a retrial.

Trump’s support for his friend came after founder of conservative group Turning Point USA Charlie Kirk tweeted that Stone “will serve more time in prison than 99% of these rioters destroying America.” Kirk was referencing people who are protesting the death of George Floyd, a black man killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis. Many demonstrations are turning violent and destructive.

“This isn’t justice,” Kirk wrote, urging people to retweet his message for a “full pardon of Roger Stone!”

Trump shared Kirk’s tweet, adding his own message, that Stone was a “victim” of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, which will "go down as the greatest political crime in history."

Federal prosecutors originally recommended Stone serve seven to nine years in prison, Politico reports. Trump criticized the sentence and called it a “horrible and very unfair situation” on Twitter.

The Justice Department then revised its guidelines, but offered no timeline for a sentence, and stated the initial proposal “could be considered excessive and unwarranted.” The four attorneys who worked on Stone’s prosecution resigned or stepped down from the case.

Stone was told by the Bureau of Prisons to report to prison by June 30 to serve his 40-month sentence. His appeal is pending.
